Flying Toasters
Where did the name Flying Toasters come from for the Department of Human Services (DHS) Toastmasters club?
The club originally started as a project in the Office of Information Services by the late Ward Kent, a former toastmaster, to promote public speaking and effective meetings. Being a computer based group the early personal computer screen saver Flying Toasters was an immediate choice since Toastmasters and Toasters are so similar, at least to the computer programmer nerd mind.
But how did a Flying Toaster as an icon ever occur? The story involves the usual programming elements of too little sleep, too much time, and a ‘why not’ way of thinking. In 1991 Jack Eastman had a Mac II with a color screen - $5,000 computer in those days. One of those late nights while wandering around the house he was thinking about the artistry problems - how to do something really fun for Mac 2.0. He drifted into the kitchen, and the toaster caught his eye. His sleep-deprived brain put wings on it.
Later friends saw his early version of the graphics and invited him to collaborate in Berkeley Systems to produce After Dark, a collection of screen savers for the Mac. Soon another product was created for the IBM PC called the Magic screen saver, which was the first screen saver for Windows. The rest, as they say, is history. If you want more or the story of early screen saver development it can be found at:
